Metal Arc Welding — Health & Safety Training

This course will enable delegates to acquire H&S accreditation certification through a ‘hands on’ approach using the different electric welding techniques.

Metal-arc welding for the purpose of this standard includes manual metal arc (MMA), metal active gas (MAG), metal inert gas (MIG), and tungsten inert gas (TIG), spot welding and plasma cutting. Colleagues must demonstrate, through practical activities, their capability in using at least one form of metal-arc welding, and their knowledge and understanding of:

What the course covers

  • Principles of manual metal-arc welding, the different sources of power, current values, open circuit and welding voltages, welding returns, welding earth, types of electrode and holders
  • The different types of equipment, safety devices and maintenance
  • The safety regulations which apply to MMA, MAG, MIG and TIG, spot welding and plasma cutting
  • Start-up and close-down procedures
  • Appropriate welding techniques
  • The use of correct personal protection for eyes, face and body
  • Appropriate working environments, ensuring the safety of onlookers with appropriate safety screens
  • Appropriate fire safety devices
  • Health and safety hazards related to electric shock, radiation from arc to both skin and eyes, burns
